American flag collection and retirement ceremony set Oct. 17

October 15, 2020

American Flag Guardians of Lewes will sponsor a flag retirement collection and ceremony Saturday, Oct. 17, on Lewes Beach. Everyone is invited to attend a brief flag retirement ceremony at 12 p.m.

Flags in need of retirement may be dropped off to members of American Flag Guardians between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., at the designated area of the Lewes Beach parking lot at the end of Savannah Road. A drive-thru option will be provided for those that are so inclined.

Unserviceable or worn flags will be respectfully and ceremoniously disposed of in accordance with the United States Flag Code Title 4, Section 8K.

The nonprofit organization donates and installs quality American flags on the homes of veterans, many of whom cannot afford or whose physical limitations preclude the pride of flag ownership.

A portion of the flags will be transferred to the Stars for Our Troops program where the stitched stars are lovingly cut out and sent to active-duty troops in a small plastic bag with an inspiring note attached.

Donations are greatly appreciated, and are used to purchase additional flags to install on the homes of the country’s deserving veterans.

Any amount may be donated when dropping off flags Oct. 17. Donations also may be mailed to American Flag Guardians, 1546 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19948.
