American Legion Post 17 hosts fall fishing trip for veterans

October 21, 2019

American Legion Post 17 sponsored its 12th annual veterans fall fishing trip Sept. 11.

Veterans from Milford’s Delaware Veterans Home, Home of the Brave and volunteers trekked out to the pier at Cape Henlopen State Park. With the help of the American Legion Post 17 family including the legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion, and auxiliary, all the fishing equipment, coolers, and wheelchairs got pushed up and down the long pier. The weather was warm and sunny with a slight breeze that kept things comfortable.

Auxiliary members provided coffee, doughnuts and ice water on the pier. Back at the post, a hearty lunch was served  to all attendees, thanks to the SALs and chef Patrick Gibson.

Pocket flags were presented to the veterans at the lunch. These miniature U.S. flags are packaged, along with encouraging personal notes, by local elementary school students with the help of JROTC cadets from Cape Henlopen High School and American Legion Unit 17 Auxiliary members.

At the post, the group was greeted by human and furry representatives from PAWS for People, a nonprofit organization committed to providing therapeutic visits to any person in the community who would benefit from interaction with a well-trained, loving pet.

A short 9/11 remembrance ceremony was held in the post pavilion to commemorate victims of the attack on America, and to honor the ultimate sacrifice of first responders and all U.S. military personnel who have given their lives in the war on terrorism.

American Legion Post 17 has been sponsoring this trip for 12 years, and it has been a great way for veterans to interact. Twice a year, weather permitting, the American Legion Family of Post 17 hosts these fishing trips with the hope of making a profound difference in veterans’ lives by providing a safe and positive outdoor experience.
