American Legion Post 17 shares history with Maedler family

October 20, 2018

American Legion Post 17 of Lewes has more history with Rylie Maedler than just the Rylie’s Dog Days of Summer 5K race.

The post hosted the popular fundraiser for Rylie’s Smile Foundation on Labor Day, Sept. 3. This nonprofit helps children facing difficult medical situations to improve their quality of life. In its third year, the run gets plenty of exposure, but there is a backstory to why it is hosted each year by American Legion Post 17 of Lewes.

Rylie’s grandfather, Robert Maedler, was a driving force behind early improvements to Post 17. A U.S. Navy veteran, “Bunker Bob” served as an active member and the post’s financial advisor for more than 15 years. Along with his friend and fellow veteran Fred Carlsten, he forged forward with new construction, improved accountability and set the high standards the post runs by today.

Bob’s wife, Susie, was also an active auxiliary member and served as auxiliary secretary. As a Lewes resident, she continues her membership to this day. Plus, Bob’s parents, Robert H. and Jennie Maedler, were two of the original post members back in 1945.
