Analog A-Go-Go spins into its ninth year

Milton festival sells out with 1,000 in attendance
November 20, 2019

Dogfish Head brewery in Milton hosted its annual Analog A-Go-Go, a weekend celebration of vinyl records and strong drink that brought 1,000 people to downtown Milton.

The sold-out event featured live music, record vendors, artists, food trucks and nine different libations, six of which were specially made for the occasion and another that was making its debut.

“We love the scale of it,” Dogfish founder Sam Calagione said. “We feel it is the right scale to be intimate but significant enough to bring the best record stores from around the country to come and set up.”

Like many of those in attendance, Calagione himself likes to search for records for his collection, with some of his notable finds this year being albums by Amy Winehouse and the Jamaican reggae group Culture, as well as a copy of Prince’s “1999.”

Sam Centeno, a native of New York but also a big Vancouver Canucks fan, was attending the event for the third time. He said in prior years, he’s stocked up on clothing, although he was browsing records this year in his No. 40, Elias Petterson Canucks jersey.

“I love the vibe,” Centeno said. “Dogfish has an awesome mystique to it.”

While the main event was held Nov. 9, the days before and after were filled with musical performances and canned beer specials at the Milton brewery.

Among the special brews for this year was Goldenmilk Latte, a gold-colored oat cream ale brewed with turmeric, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, verum and vanilla beans; Leaf in Place, a dark-colored porter brewer with hazelnuts and figs and aged in rum casks; and Koffee Koyt, a light Dutch oat ale combined with Rise Up cold-press coffee.

For a stronger flavor there was Autumn Rose, an apple brandy served hot, and the event’s special collaboration, Booze For Breakfast, a whiskey-based coffee liqueur blended with coffee from Rise Up. The concoction debuted at the event and is now for sale at Dogfish Head’s brewery and Rehoboth Beach brewpub, as well as at Rise Up’s Rehoboth location.

Finally, there were tastings of two beers that can be found at retail: Slightly Mighty, Dogfish’s low calorie IPA, and American Beauty Hazy Ripple IPA, a hazy, New England-style IPA that is a variation of American Beauty, Dogfish’s collaboration beer with the Grateful Dead.

Dogfish’s musical collaborations were the subject of a fireside chat, complete with digital fire, between Calagione and Michael Kurtz, one of the founders of Record Store Day. Dogfish Head has been the official beer of Record Store Day since 2015. At the end of their chat, Calagione and Kurtz revealed an early version of the official poster for Record Store Day 2020.

Calagione said for the 10th anniversary next year, “We’re going to go all out, especially with the live music on that weekend.”Ian Cosgro
