Annual tulip dig in Lewes set April 27

April 19, 2021

The City of Lewes, in partnership with Lewes In Bloom, will hold its annual tulip dig starting at 8 a.m., Tuesday, April 27, lasting until all gone. The rain date is Wednesday, April 28.

So that everyone has an opportunity to bring some tulips home, organizers respectfully request that no one disturb the bulbs prior to 8 a.m., April 27; after that, it is first come first dig.

Members of the public are invited to bring their shovels, spades, trowels and bags to assist the city and Lewes In Bloom with removing the tulip bulbs and giving them new homes.

Lewes In Bloom planted close to 20,000 bulbs for the 11th Annual Tulip Celebration. The following areas are included in the tulip dig: 1812 Park, Lewes City Hall, new Lewes Public Library, Mary Vessels Park, Otis Smith Park aka Rotary Pavilion, Lewes Post Office, Stango Park, St. Peter’s Church barrels and Zwaanendael Park.

Three gardens not included in the dig are Citizens Bank on Second Street, the corners of Savannah and Front Street/Gills Neck Road, and the lighthouse garden on Freeman Highway.

Each dig location will be supervised by a Lewes In Bloom member or a City of Lewes Parks & Recreation commissioner. No other plants or flowers are to be removed besides tulips.
