Another Lewes parking lot is not the answer

August 7, 2018

We read with much distress the Aug. 3 Cape Gazette front-page article, "Lewes group debates new beach parking lot." We are in complete agreement with City Manager Ann Marie Townshend. Lewes Beach does not need another parking lot at the expense of a necessary dune.

Lewes Beach has more than enough problems with flooding and beach erosion. Not only does this proposal further weaken an already compromised beachfront, it encourages overuse of our already fragile beach.

We are in agreement with alternate parking sites such as the high school with shuttle service. Further, we would propose that the city require those who park on Cedar Street buy day passes for parking. This would increase city revenue while decreasing street parking. Long ago, Rehoboth Beach began charging for nonresident parking. We need to do the same. Such additional revenue could be used to maintain Lewes Beach and its dunes.

As Lewes Beach full-time residents, we want to do everything possible to maintain this fragile area, and know that another beach parking lot used for only six to eight weeks of the year is not the answer.
