With the pandemic, the current University of Delaware football schedule has been suspended at this time. Dave Frederick’s article, 10/16/20, was a stroll down memory lane. Reading the list of former UD athletes connected to the downstate area was like reading a list of good friends. And friends they were and remain.
Coached by Dave Nelson (no relation) and Tubby Raymond was like a family. Tough choices were made but always with kindness and respect both from coaches and players. There were no one-and-done seasons. Players stayed four years and were guided by lofty goals that resulted in several championships.
My husband, Lenny, was a member or the 1959 Lambert Cup team. Lenny played in the position of tackle as No. 77. At age 26, he was the oldest on the team of 19- to 22-year-old players. He was known for his speed and agility, but his team affectionately called him “Earthquake.” His opponents were often in awe as they lined up on the field across from him. He mowed them down and kept on going.
Students, families, locals and fans never missed a game. Lenny is now deceased, but the memories linger on as I continue to read today’s issue of the Gazette.
