Archives unveils Delta Sigma Theta and Women's Suffrage display

February 28, 2020

In observation of Black History Month, State Archivist Stephen Marz and the staff of the Delaware Public Archives welcomed Gov. John Carney, Dr. Reba Hollingsworth, elected officials, members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and more than 125 guests as the Archives opened its new lobby display Feb. 17.

Delta Sigma Theta & Women’s Suffrage is the first of the Delaware Public Archives’ planned displays throughout the year to mark the centennial observation of the passage of the 19th Amendment. The display details the history of the sorority with books, historic photographs, documents and newspaper clippings, and chronicles the sorority’s involvement with the first Woman Suffrage Procession on Washington, D.C., in 1913.

Hollingsworth, vice chair of the Delaware Heritage Commission and past president of the Dover Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, offered remarks. Carney signed a proclamation to formally declare February as Black History Month and urged all Delawareans to observe the month of February with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities that emphasize the history and contributions of Delawareans of African descent.

The free exhibition is available for the public to visit during business hours at the Delaware Public Archives, 121 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. North, Dover.
