Artist Ellen Rice to talk about Strength of Woman series Oct. 7

October 5, 2017

In 1994, well-known Delaware artist Ellen Rice saw a dreamlike vision while in prayer about potentially devastating life situations surrounding her. With the vision came healing and the first in what is now a seven-part inspirational series of paintings under the name, The Strength of Woman.

Rice has reserved time to talk about the series in the studio area of her gallery in Ocean View from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7. She will answer some of the questions she regularly receives about these pieces and take questions from those attending. In addition to her talk Saturday, she's also unveiling a large new coastal oil at 11 a.m. and will be signing and personalizing prints from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All are welcome. Although Rice is perhaps best known regionally and collected internationally for her luminescent seascapes and landscapes, she says the woman series compels strong reactions. The series combined in print nearly keeps pace with sales of her 100-plus regional scenes in print.

The artist says people began asking several years ago if there was a book telling the background story of how the paintings came to be. Today, she is in the process of writing it, a combination of biography and art book.

"It's a different sort of animal, and it's just developing," said Rice. "We'll see where it leads. I enjoy hearing from people who collect the series, particularly when someone tells me how a painting has helped them. Their comments and questions also help me with this process. So I hope lots of people come to my open forum talk Saturday and comment."

The Ellen Rice Gallery is at 111 Atlantic Ave., Ocean View, just 2.2 miles west of Bethany Beach in the former Kool Bean building. (Look for the red shutters.) For more information, go to ellenrice.gallery.
