Athletes of the Week April 9

April 9, 2021
Iseabal Cryne

Izzy, now a senior, has been the starting lacrosse goalie since she arrived on the Macon, Ga. campus of Mercer University. Her short story is “Milton to Macon” protecting the house! Izzy was named to the All-Southern Conference Preseason Team for 2020 before the season was canceled after six games. She is a member of the 2019 all-tournament team and 2018 academic honor roll. The 2021 Bears are currently 4-4 on the season with wins over Winthrop (17-14), Woffard (20-5), Delaware State (21-3) and Kennesaw State (20-19). Izzy has started all eight games. She is now four wins away from becoming Mercer’s all-time winningest goalie. Mercer has four regular-season games remaining and then the conference tournament. Izzy was part of four state championship teams while at Cape and was also a star goalie when playing for Atlantic Lacrosse.

Madge Layfield

Madge is a freshman pitcher for the Sussex Central Golden Knights softball team. Madge started her high school career losing 2-1 in extra innings to defending state champion Smyrna in a game where she struck out 20 batters. Layfield came back to win the next five games, including three shutouts, while compiling a total of 49 strikeouts over four of those games. She also hit a home run against Milford in a 19-2 victory. Madge’s catcher is Katelyn Evick, daughter of Mike Evick, former catcher for Cape and brother of Cape coach Ben Evick. Cape will play at Sussex Central Tuesday, April 20. Madge’s teammate Marissa Frederick has struck out 43 over four games.

Bob Paulen

Legends Stadium attracts legends like 84-year-old masters track guy Bob Paulen, who trains shirtless in the afternoon on a red-hot track, often running hurdles. Paulen is not like some aging athletes in the sport of running, those trying to beat the clock, stay healthy and not get fat. Preacher Paulen is a track guy – he runs to win. He knows his sport and the other athletes who continue to compete. Bob has won 46 National gold medals from five different events, plus 83 silver and 22 bronze. In world competition, Bob has four gold, six silver and five bronze. “The world event is biannual and I don’t go every time,” Bob said. Anyone who sees Bob on the Cape track should stop and say hello, but don’t linger because he is there to work out. Next year will mark 20 years for Bob competing in masters track and field, and he plans to go to Finland for the world games.

Chloe Schaeffer

Chloe was a great player as a senior on Cape’s undefeated 2019 state championship lacrosse team. Chloe scored 14 goals with four assists in three state tournament games, including five goals and three assists in a 15-8 win over Archmere in the finals. Chloe missed playing her junior year due to a foot injury, but she scored at least one goal in each state championship game in her freshman and sophomore years. Chloe took her talents to the Division I Mercer University in Macon, Ga. During her pandemic-shortened freshman year, Chloe started all seven games and recorded eight goals and five assists for 13 points. In her sophomore season this year, she has scored 12 goals with six assists in addition to eight ground balls and draw controls.
