Athletes of the Week Aug. 20

August 20, 2021
Nate Horn

This 6-foot-2, 225-pound junior linebacker and honors student is thick, a three-quarter-ton truck. If you’re a blocker, you just hope he doesn’t see you coming. Nate squats 500 pounds, so he’s not easy to knock off his pins. “Nate is an old-school, Penn State-type linebacker and captain of the defense,” said Cape coach J.D. Maull. “Nate is the guy who sets the tone with physicality. If you’re going to play the knock-back game versus us, you’re going to see a lot of Nate Horn in on tackles.” Nate also runs some up back on short yardage situations; he's essentially a lineman for life who is allowed to touch the ball.

Leo Hunsberger

You hear the name Leo Hunsberger, a junior transfer student from Perkiomen Valley High School in Pennsylvania, perhaps you're expecting a starter on the math team, except there is no math team. Leo is a junior outside linebacker and running back on offense. He was an all-conference player as a sophomore at Perkiomen Valley. “Leo has a great attitude, is very smart and plays fast,” said coach J.D. Maull. “We coaches love it when guys like that just show up on day one.” Leo said he is not related to anyone in the Cape district, and that his parents retired and this is the place they chose to relocate. And he added, “I absolutely love it here already.”

Ester Moreno

This senior returns to the Vikings volleyball squad in 2021 as a varsity player after transferring to Cape from Maryland as a junior. "Ester has improved so much from last season," said senior teammate Rileigh Wilson. "She worked really hard and has proven to come out so much stronger than last year. I think everyone is going to be very impressed by her this season." An honor roll student at Cape, Ester will provide senior leadership on and off the court. "Ester had a fantastic tryout," said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “The early signs are that her skill set has improved drastically, and her attitude was so upbeat and positive. She was a welcoming face and presence to those who were new and continued to push returning players. I’m excited to have her back for her senior year." A member of the Cape Leo Club, Ester loves music and also sings for her church.

Roxanne Ramirez

Former Sussex Tech standout Rox Ramirez won the Maggie’s Mile Aug. 13 with a time of 5:10, winning the Elite Division in the inaugural event. Ramirez is beginning her final year at the University of Delaware, where she will finish with a bachelor of science degree and a master’s in speech/language pathology. She’s a two-time all-conference runner in cross country and is fifth all-time for the Blue Hens in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She helped lead her Blue Hens team to the 2019 CAA team championship. Rox has run 4:32 for 1,500 meters, 10:59 for the 3K steeple and 17:40 for the 5K. A great career for a super person and athlete sharing a birthday with her high school coach Lou Nicoletti.
