Athletes of the Week Dec. 18

December 18, 2020
Chase Boyle

This shortstop heading to Delaware State on a baseball scholarship lost his junior season during the pandemic spring. Chase was on the Milton majors team coached by Rusty Rauch that went to the Eastern Regionals when he was 12. Last winter, the 6-foot-2 versatile athlete with great hands and serious ups stayed fit by playing basketball for the Golden Knights of Sussex Central. During last Friday night’s football game at Smyrna, with his team trailing 34-32 with five seconds remaining, Jon Boat Johnny Wells elected to throw the fading fly to Chase in the corner of the end zone. Chase caught the ball in stride with no bobbles or wobbles for a 38-34 Sussex Central victory and a berth in the Division I state finals Saturday, Dec. 19, against Middletown. Chase’s older sister Rylee Shockley is a senior at Lebanon Valley College. Younger sister Mckenna Boyle plays field hockey, basketball and softball at Central. He has an older sister Gabrielle who is 24. His dad Billy was an athlete at Seaford, while mom Kristie is a Cape girl.

Haley Craig

A Cape senior field hockey and lacrosse player, Haley is an unsung, mentally tough player who plays in the back as a last line of defense. She has been nursing a hamstring/hip injury all season but has remained in the lineup. Haley would never give in to a hobble and risk losing her position on a team with a deep bench. Haley is going to Lynn University to play lacrosse. It’s hard to shake down how many state title teams Haley has been a part of over her two sports and four years at Cape. She is the embodiment of the tough athletic/academic competitor that has helped the Cape girls capture 20 titles in lacrosse and hockey since 2009.

Riley Klopp

Riley’s Aunt Lisa Klopp Kammerer played hockey at Central and was an All-American at Lock Haven. Older sister Darby was a freshman starter on a Franklin & Marshall team that made it to the national championship game. Riley is a cross between those two – physically tough like Aunt Lisa with deceiving quickness like Blade Runner Darby. Riley is a Gold Star Award winner for Girl Scouts just like Darby and will go to Franklin & Marshall next fall to join her sister on the hockey field. Riley worked her way into a position as a starting midfielder for Cape this 2020 state championship season, and according to coaches, she was a solid two-way performer at both ends of the hockey field.

Julia Saleur

A French shooting guard was summering in Lewes with her grandparents when she walked onto the court at The Factory. And she stayed. According to coach Pat Woods, “Julia is a 5-foot-10, pass-first, athletic, lockdown defender who can finish and shoot. Watching her and Mehkia [Applewhite] and Morgan [Mahoney] go at it is fun. Watching them play together is scary. She is a junior like them.” Julia has played with Elite teams in France that play national schedules at the U18 level. France got shut down for sports, so the family decided to move in with the grandparents. “The Cape girls are thrilled to have her,” Woods said. “She is very kind, a great teammate and great player. She fit in very well. Julia speaks English without much of a French accent. She studied abroad, then stayed, but now she’s a Cape girl.” Julia Saleur from downtown! Oui!
