Athletes of the Week June 22

June 22, 2018
Nate Elliott

Nate made a great impression at Henlopen Soccer Club Soccer Camp this week at Cape Henlopen's Bermuda grass field, running, dribbling, passing and shooting like a budding superstar. He will be entering fifth grade at Shields Elementary School this fall, where he loves his ELA class. “Nate is very coachable and shows great sportsmanship.," said Camp Director Patrick Kilby. "He does a good job of including younger campers and sets a great example in listening to instruction and applying coaching points to camp activities.” When not on the soccer field, Nate plays baseball in the Lewes Little League and he loves to fish.

Brooks Parker

A football and basketball player from Delmar and integral member of the Wildcats’ school community, Brooks helped lead Delmar to the 2017 Division II football state championship. He scored three touchdowns in a 36-10 win over Milford Nov. 3 and three more in a Nov. 10 28-21 win over Woodbridge. An Honors student, he is heading to Delaware State, where he will play football and major in electrical engineering. He will compete in the Blue-Gold All-Star game June 23. Gold coaches Bill Collick and Dan Candeloro were excited to report that at a team meeting Parker sat down at a piano and went all John Legend, saying he was absolutely amazing. When asked if he played the piano Parker said, “just a little bit.”

Megan Smith

A rising eighth-grader at Beacon Middle School, this lacrosse defender showed her skill and energetic efforts at the Vikings Lacrosse Camp at the Cape Henlopen High School turf fields June 18-20. "Megan goes 100 percent in every drill," said counselor Anna Frederick. "She's very focused on everything the coaches are teaching, and she does a great job implementing the skills into her game. She's very aggressive on defense. She doesn't play like a 13-year-old." Megan is also a defender for the Eastern Shore Lacrosse Club, and she also plays the setter position on the Premier travel volleyball team. When not on the turf or the hardwood court, she likes hanging out a the beach with her friends and family.

Jared Wagenhoffer

The starting quarterback for the Gold team, out of Caesar Rodney, Jared was also a starting midfielder on the Riders’ lacrosse team that lost in the state finals to Salesianum. “We were 1-9 [in football] my junior year, and we turned that around to 7-3 last season,” Jared said. “We basically ran the Wing T with a little spread offense thrown in.” Jared is heading to Wesley College in the fall and will major in sports management. “I’m more of a pocket passer, but I can run it on play action, basically whatever it takes to help the team win.” Jared will be a two-sport athlete at Wesley, playing both football and lacrosse.
