Athletes of the Week June 24

June 24, 2022
Quade Cummings

Quade, 12, is a kid who joyfully runs races. He doesn’t fret; he just gets after it. At the Sangria Stampede June 18, it was apparent Quade had never heard of sangria unless it comes in juice boxes. Most of the race at Hudson Fields was visible. Quade chased Matt Keller, 44, of Manchester, Pa., but Matt was in no mood to relinquish the lead for a Saturday morning sangria kid’s special, winning in 22:04. Coming down the straightaway to the finish chute, Quade was passed by Luis Cardenas of Painesville, Ohio, who ran 24:05. Quade, who is going into seventh grade at Postlethwait, ran 24:11 for third place overall and first in his age group. Quade is learning adult runners are out there to beat kids and codgers, but when you’re 12 and talented, you just know the field is coming back to you. Quade also won his age group at the recent DQ Dash 5K in 22:17.

Yougendy Mauricette

This Sussex Tech junior collected four gold medals at the DIAA state track meet and posted state-leading marks in six events throughout the season. He didn’t put his name on the map nationally until June 17 at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia. Running in the “slow” heat of the 400-meter hurdles, Mauricette clocked a blistering time of 51.31 seconds to take the crown by a comfortable margin. His time was the quickest in the United States this season and ranks 42nd all time, 13th among juniors. It also established a new state record, eclipsing the old mark by nearly 2.5 seconds. Mauricette ranks among America’s top 50 11th graders in five events – the 400 hurdles (first, 51.31), long jump (12th, 23-feet-3.5-inches), 300 hurdles (28th, 38.01), 110 hurdles (33rd, 14.35) and 400 meters (41st, 47.96). If blue-blood track programs from the SEC, Pac-12 and ACC weren’t already knocking at his door, they sure are now.

Tyler Muse

Tyler won the Georgetown Library 5K June 17 in 16:01, which is a 5:09 mile pace and a walk in the park for the teacher of fifth-graders in Salisbury, Md. Back in 2020, Tyler did an eight-by-one-mile workout, all negative splits each mile, with the last clocked at 4:26. In November, Tyler won the Bay Bridge 10K, besting 10,000 maniacs chasing him, running to a time of 30:46, a 4:57 mile pace. On June 4, Tyler won the Baltimore 10-Miler in 53:49, then followed that with a June 5 win at the Bel Air Town Run 5K in 15:09. “I have two big races this summer,” Tyler said. “A 10K on the Fourth of July and a 12-miler in August, both in Baltimore. I’ll just be hopping in some random 5Ks to keep my marathon training fun. I’m hoping for a 2:24 or faster marathon this year.”

Lucas Ruppert

Lucas was selected as the Outstanding Athlete at the Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game June 17 at the University of Delaware. Lucas is headed to Division III Hobart College in upstate New York, where he will play football for the Statesmen. Lucas leaves Cape as an all-state lineman and state champion wrestler at 285 pounds. Lucas needed a descent plan coming off football season, dropping from 315 pounds down to 285 for wrestling. Coached by former heavyweight state champion and lineman for life Matt Graviet, the plan was easy – “Don’t eat so much.”
