Athletes of the Week March 15

March 15, 2019
Jhayden Hollomon

A sophomore, an A honor roll student and a three-sport athlete, Jhayden is coming off an undefeated JV field hockey season and undefeated JV girls’ basketball season. And now she is playing lacrosse for the first time in her life, and she was handed a helmet and goalie stick in practice. “I like to finish what I start, so I’ll stay there as long as the team needs me,” she said with her trademark smile. “This is my third straight spring trying something new. I played softball, then ran track, and now I’m playing lacrosse.” Jhayden is an energizer athlete. ”I like to encourage people,” she said. “I think positive energy is contagious.” Her grandfather is Tim Hollomon, former Cape football player, and her mom is Katrice Hollomon.

Brody McMahon

Brody is a 6-foot-5, 185-pound senior long pole defenseman for the Cape lacrosse team. “This is my second year starting,” he said. “I play down low and usually play on lefties. I play indoor and lift.” Coach Mark D’Ambrogi said, “Brody has provided a very steady and dependable piece to our defense. He has a lot of experience and has done a great job in the clearing game.” Brody will attend St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pa., a small school with a D3 program, where he will major in accounting and finance. His mom is a surgical nurse, while dad is the head chef for Highway One. “Mom does all the cooking at home,” Brody said with a smile.

Matt Prestipino

Matt is entering his senior year of lacrosse as a second-year starter after spending his first two seasons “on the bench,” as Matt remembered with a smile. “I’ve had some great games that the coaches see, but not many others are paying attention to some long pole buried down inside the defense. My mother watches me, then asks, ‘Did you have a good game?’ And I always tell her, ‘Yes, I did.’” Coach Mark D’Ambrogi said, “Matt was an excellent leader by example in both practice and games last season. He has become more of a vocal leader this year as a senior and has really improved his game.” Matt is the youngest of four brothers. He will attend the University of Delaware in the fall.

Ben Weathersby

A 6-foot-4, 185-pound long pole defenseman for Cape lacrosse, Ben has worked his way through the program with bumps and bruises, and is a full-time starter down low along with Brody McMahon and Matt Prestipino. “In football, you get hit and have to keep running, while in lacrosse, you keep running until you get hit,” Ben said. Coach Mark D’Ambrogi said, “Ben is constantly getting better and working to improve something else in his game. He has great feet and is tough, so as a result, he is difficult to beat one-on-one.” Ben is also an AP and honors student who will either attend Lynn College in Florida and major in film, or Lebanon Valley in Pennsylvania and play football. He works for Bluecoast restaurant on weekends.
