Athletes of the Week March 31

March 31, 2023
Tayler Flaherty

This Sussex Academy junior has scored a goal in each of the Seahawks’ first two matches this season. In the season-opening 5-1 win over Cape, Tayler assisted on a first-half goal by Natalie Roblero Chavez, then found the net for her own score in the second half. She followed it up with a first-half goal against Sussex Tech in her team’s 3-0 win. The Ocean View native started playing soccer at River Soccer Club at 4 years old. She currently plays for Shore FC travel soccer team. She also plays varsity volleyball and is an honor roll student. "Tayler has been a phenomenal leader for us this year,” said Sussex Academy coach RJ Dina. “She has the maturity to find individual success as well as make those around her better. Tayler has the ability to finish with either foot and makes teams pay with her added athletic abilities. We are lucky to have her." Tayler plans to play soccer at the Division II or III collegiate level.

Gage Joseph

A junior outfielder/pitcher on the Cape baseball squad, this honors student has come back from a severe knee injury and surgery last March to pick up where he left off, shutting down batters and driving the ball for power. Gage hit .345 as a freshman and was awarded second-team all-state honors. Since the nine-month rehab on his knee, he is 2-0 this season with wins over Caesar Rodney and Dover, garnering 13 strikeouts in nine innings. "Gage has shown dominant stuff on the mound," said Cape coach Ben Evick. "He also has the ability to drive balls out of the park to all fields and has an advanced approach at the plate. Gage is a silent leader. He works hard every day and leads by example." He plays for the Richmond Braves travel team in the off season and can usually be found fishing, hunting or practicing the national pastime in his barn with his Pop Pop Wayne.

Natalya Roundtree

A junior center fielder and honor roll student on the Cape softball team, Natalya recently went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs against Dover in Cape’s 20-0 win March 28. Her speed on the bases caused problems for the Senators, forcing fielders to make an error. "I'm really happy for Natalya," said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “She started for us as a freshman and struggled a little last season. But this season she has worked very hard and is doing great. She is a role player and will pinch run for us, be a designated hitter and sometimes start for us. I'm really proud of her." Natalya also plays for the East Coast Elite travel softball team in Laurel. When not on the softball diamond or studying, she enjoys braiding hair and hanging out with her best friend Mya.

Lex Wescott

A  junior transfer from Woodbridge, the Blue Raiders’ loss is definitely Cape's gain. Lex recently had a single and run scored against Caesar Rodney and garnered two hits, including a double, and scored a run against Dover. "Lex has been an amazing addition to the program," said Cape coach Ben Evick. "He’s one of the best all-around athletes we have and he has been performing early in the season. He’s hitting .500 so far through the first two games, and he has great feet and soft hands at third base. Lex filled a major need for us with Timmy Hitchcock moving to shortstop; we needed a quality third baseman. He is a tremendous asset and he looks to be setting up a tremendous season." He also plays for the East Coast Royals travel team in Maryland. When not between the baseball lines, you can find Lex fishing, at the beach or hanging out with his family.

Bri Windish

A sophomore honor roll student on the Cape softball team, Bri went 3-for-4 against Dover March 28, with a triple, double and single and garnering an RBI in the 20-0 victory over the Senators. "Bri is doing really great this season," said Cape coach Mike Tkach. "Not just from her physical play, but also her mental play. We're asking a lot of her, from pitching to playing centerfield to holding down the hot corner on third base and wherever we need her. She is very unselfish and tells us that she'll play anywhere we need her." She is also involved with Morgan’s Message, which strives to end the stigma surrounding mental health in athletes. Bri plays on the Vikings’ field hockey team in the fall and hones her softball skills on the Delaware Fury Cobras travel softball team in the off season. When not on the fields of Cape, you can find her running, going to the beach or hanging with her little sister Riley.
