Athletes of the Week Nov. 6

November 6, 2020
Julian Calloway

A Cape junior cross country runner who also runs the 800 indoors, Julian has settled into the No. 3 position on Cape’s talented and undefeated team behind Ryan Baker and Ethan Edery. “My goal is to break 17 minutes this season and help our team make a run at the conference and state titles,” he said. Coach Matt Lindell said, “Julian was first-team all-conference last year breaking 17 minutes, and he was the runner-up in the Sussex County Championship race last season. He did not run XC until last season. In fact, during his ninth-grade year, he only ran spring track and was a sprinter until I talked him into moving up to the 800. His first 800, he ran 2:20 and did not break a sweat, stating that he could run faster. He ended up going sub-2:10 by the end of the season, and we talked him into running XC. When he is not competing, he has a great sense of humor and keeps his teammates entertained.” Julian has the talent to make fast running look easy.

Jaden Davis

You have to be a hardened, tough athlete and team player to play both ways through two losses and just keep making plays while not pointing fingers. Plenty has been written about the high character and academic/athletic leadership of two-sport senior Jaden Davis. In the Oct. 30 loss to Smyrna, Jaden carried the ball 25 times for 135 yards and also had three catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. Jaden scored two touchdowns with 65 yards on 14 carries in Cape’s season-opening loss at Sussex Central. Cape plays at Milford (1-0) Friday, Nov. 6. Last season, Jaden had a 100-yard night against the Bucs, including a 54-yard touchdown run in a 28-14 Cape victory. Jaden is a next-level player, kind of an Emmitt Smith-style running back. If Cape keeps feeding him the ball, he’ll keep battering the defense.

Juan Larez-Carillo

A senior and a captain on the Cape soccer team, Juan scored a pair of goals, including a penalty kick, in Cape’s 6-1 road win at Delmar Nov. 2. He also had the assist in Cape’s Oct. 27 1-0 home win over Sussex Academy. Juan had a penalty kick in Cape’s 3-3 draw at Smyrna. “Juan Larez-Carillo is our best all-around player,” said coach Patrick Kilby. “He has such a high soccer IQ and is our field general. He speaks softly, but his teammates listen when he does speak. As a team captain, Juan carries a presence that forces all teams we play to account for him. He plays for Henlopen Soccer Club. He has fought back from a knee injury that required surgery. He is leaning toward Bloomsburg to play and wants to study business.” “My club team is Henlopen DASA 02,” Juan said. “My plans are to play soccer in college. It’s hard to say where right now, because I was out with injury for 15 months, so I didn’t get any looks my junior year and the global situation now makes it even harder.”

Ella Shockley

Ella is a junior midfielder/defender on the Delmar Wildcats field hockey team who shows up in big moments. Shockley broke a scoreless tie with Cape at 13:26 of the third quarter Nov. 2, then backed that up with a second goal at 5:26 off an assist from Maci Bradford, as Delmar defeated Cape 2-0. Ella had scored one of the 24 goals Delmar had on the books coming into the Cape game. Last season, Shockley scored a pair of goals when Cape lost at Delmar 4-0. Her grandfather is Costen Shockey, former major league first baseman by way of Georgetown High School who played for the Phillies and Angels. Costen goes to Ella’s games, but his baseball card won’t get him past the gate at away venues. Ella is a verbal commit to West Chester University, the defending Division II National Champions. Ella has a 4.0 GPA, and this is her second placement of the fall in a Cape Gazette Athlete of the Week window.
