Athletes of the Week Oct. 11

October 11, 2019
Anna Harrington

This Cape grad and Milton native scored the second goal Oct. 5 for the Washington College Shorewomen in a 2-0 win at McDaniel College. The insurance goal came with 7:47 left to play. Anna, a freshman, was honored by Washington College as Shorewoman of the Week. Locally that gets backed up with Cape Gazette Athlete of the Week. Washington College is 3-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play on the season. Anna was a major player on the 17-1 Cape team that won the Division I title last year. “Anna knows the game. She was always in the right place and knows how to compete,” said Cape coach Kate Austin. “We are all so proud of her success at Washington College.”

Sydney Ostroski

Sydney was a big game field hockey assassin during her senior year at Cape in fall of 2015. That team went 19-0 and won the state title, beating Brandywine, Mt. Pleasant, Tower Hill and Delmar in the tournament. Sydney scored four goals with an assist in tournament play. She was starting catcher on the softball team that went 14-4. Sydney headed north to West Chester, where coed women have been carrying hockey stick across the quad for 70 years. She was made a defender, but mostly made to wait. Syd has hung tough as a defender on the No. 1-ranked Division II team in the country. She has started five of 10 games with two assists and two shots on goal. But more importantly, she has reached down deep and persevered. The Golden Rams are 10-0 with seven shutouts.

Brooke Terhune

This sixth-grader is new to the sport of cross country, and in just her first year with the Mariner program and coach Kenny Riedel, she has been a pleasant surprise to the team. In the opening meet of the season, she was 10th for the 3K course in 16:23. She finished second last week in 13:19 on the same course. In the Oct. 7 Mariner meet, Brooke finished first for her team and second in the race in a new personal best of 13:00. “Brooke is starting to figure the sport out and learning how to pace herself through the 3K distance,” Riedel said. “It gives us a great 1-2 punch with already established frontrunner Ali Stevenson.”   Brooke and her family are also regular participants of 5K races through Milton during the off-season.

Kayla Werner

This Beacon eighth-grader doesn’t move through the hallways repping a school team, she is just waiting for the weekend so she can race her BMX bike. Last weekend, Kayla raced to the Gold Cup Southeast Championships in Clemmons, N.C. Based on her finish from qualifiers and the championship, Kayla earned the No. 2 spot on the team for 13-year-old Expert Girls. Expert is the highest level of proficiency for riders who aren’t professional. Kayla rides for a team called 1-800-KAOS. Every weekend she’s out there strapping on her helmet and searching for wins.
