Athletes of the Week Oct. 4

October 4, 2019
Jaden Davis

Jaden is a defensive midfielder off Cape’s spring 2019 state championship lacrosse team. He’s mentally smart and physically thick. He rolls through the midfield with thunder. For the football team, the junior two-way player ran for 115 yards on 20 carries in just one half of work Sept. 27, as Dover throttled Cape 56-0. Jaden got his yards, then went to linebacker to see where he could help. Last year, he weighed 140 pounds. Now, he’s 165 and moving with greater speed. “Just keep feeding me the ball,” he said. “The more carries and more touches, the better.” Jaden said he likes football more than lacrosse, feeling that is his best sport. He takes all honors classes and gets As and Bs. “I feel like I can play at the next level,” Davis said. “That’s what I’m working toward.”

Hunter Jones

A sophomore lacrosse player and cross country runner, Hunter is in the varsity lineup for coach Matt Lindell’s boys’ cross country team. In a Virginia meet Sept. 28, Hunter broke his personal best by 20 seconds, running the course in a time of 17:53. The top five runners all ran their best, with Ethan Ederly in 17:01, Jullian Calloway in 17:23, Hunter Jones in 17:52, Ryan Baker in 17:56 and Ace Howard in 18:01. “We had three sophomores and a freshman under 18 minutes,” Hunter said. “Coach Lindell said this is the best team he’s coached at Cape.” He continued, “My goal this spring is to make the varsity lacrosse team. I do a lot of speed stuff and shoot pretty well coming from the midfield.” Hunter is an honors student and in an 11th-grade math class. “I may do indoor track and lift to get ready for lacrosse,” he said.

Alan Marin-Quiroz

The Cape senior has proven to be a powerful last line of defense for the soccer squad this season, making 39 saves in six games and having consecutive shutouts in the games against Dover, Indian River and Sussex Tech. "Alan is very athletic and fearless when coming off his line," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "His communication skills are superb. He provides our back line with endless advice throughout the game and demands excellence from his teammates. He holds himself to a pretty high standard, and as one of our captains, he has really earned the respect of his teammates." An honor society student, Alan has interned in early childhood education in the Cape district. He also participates on the JROTC Raider team, drill team, color guard team and honor guard team. In his spare time, he performs weekly JROTC community service.

Francisco Puac

A 34-year-old local runner out of Georgetown, Francisco was the top local finisher at the Dogfish Dash 8K in a time of 27:39, good for third overall, which is a 5:40 mile pace over the approximately five-mile distance. He clocked 17:30 after 3.1 miles. Francisco comes from the soccer side of athletics. He discovered running later in life. He works multiple jobs, which not only leaves little time for long-distance training, but also, running every weekend can prove expensive. Francisco is a Dreamer from Guatemala. He recently visited Washington, D.C., with his parents and had a picture taken in front of the Supreme Court. His training is now focused on the 12th annual Rehoboth Beach Marathon in early December. Francisco ran 16:23 in July to win the Dam Mill 5K, and he also won the Run for JJ.
