Jude Bastian
This smooth-striding sophomore has rocketed up the Cape cross country depth chart since his first day on Kings Highway, slashing nearly four minutes from his personal best in just over a season. Jude set a new PB of 16:51 in the Sept. 23 sweep of Smyrna, Polytech and Delmarva Christian, placing fourth overall and establishing himself as a major contributor for a squad with state championship aspirations. Judy also came up huge at the 24-team Spartan Moonlight Showcase in Wilmington last week, helping the Vikings capture the team title over perennial power Tatnall with a 13:23 4K effort. “[Matt] Lindell is just a great coach and knows what he’s doing with us,” Jude said. “We have so many good people now that if you just run with the pack, it basically forces you to get better.” Jude is an AP/honors kid who likes to hit the links when he’s not logging mileage.
Laura Karen Lima
A junior honor roll student at Cape, this fleet-footed wide receiver made history in the 44-20 flag football victory over Caesar Rodney last week, using her cheetah-like speed to score the first four touchdowns at Legends Stadium. "Laura is a real leader on the team," said coach Amanda Evans. "She comes willing and eager to compete, put the work in, make adjustments where needed, and she is constantly leading by example. She is an exciting player to watch." In their second year as a program, the Vikings are 2-0 and have already surpassed last season's win total. Laura is involved with Morgan's Message at Cape and competes on the basketball team in the winter as well as the track team in the spring. She still finds time to play for the Fusion travel basketball team. In her leisure time, she enjoys going to the beach.
Julia Moore
A sophomore Academic Challenge and AP student at Cape, this flag football quarterback wrote history in the 44-20 victory over Caesar Rodney last week. She passed for five touchdowns and ran for numerous first downs and a two-point conversion. "Julia is very competitive on the athletic field," said coach Amanda Evans. "You can see when she steps foot on the turf that she means business, whether at practice or in the games. She is constantly building up the team chemistry and is a pleasure to watch." Julia and her team will play flag football extravaganza this weekend at Indian River High School, where they'll play three games. In addition to flag football, she competes for the swim team in winter and plays on the soccer team in the spring. When not playing sports for the Vikings, she can be found hanging out with her family or going to the beach.
Bodhi Williams
This Sussex Academy junior has earned the captain's band for his fourth year on the top-notch Seahawks' boys' soccer team. Bodhi, a gifted golfer, used his knowledge of sending balls into rainy, windy conditions, and a measured touch, to guide two balls to teammates in the box who finished them off in the back of the net in a 2-1 win over Saints Peter & Paul (Md.) Sept. 22. "Bodhi, only a junior, has been a contributor in this program for four years now," said coach Kyle Wheatley. "As others before him have departed, he’s taken ownership of his role as a leader with a relatively young group of players surrounding him. His ability to compete and lead by example has shown up consistently at training sessions and games alike. We are maturing quickly as a team and Bodhi is at the heart of that outcome." When not playing soccer or golfing, Bodhi can also be found playing music.
