Bentley Jackson
This multisport athlete displayed his baseball skills recently in the Bagel Bombers Olenik 10U squad's 18-14 win over the Delmarva Aces Coastal 10U in the semifinal of the May Shootout tournament at Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury, Md. He went yard in the fifth inning and came up again with the bases loaded in the same inning with the score tied at 14-14. He delivered a two-out grand slam to power the team to the walk-off victory and a spot in the final. Bentley is a fourth-grader in the Cape Henlopen School District, playing baseball, lacrosse, football and wrestling. He played on the undefeated Atlantic Lacrosse team this spring and is currently training with Boys on the Run for his first 5K. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and hanging with his friends and family at the beach when he is not playing sports.
Seth Moore
This 14-year-old eighth-grader at Sussex Academy has been making a name for himself in cross country and track and field. He is working toward an ambitious goal of becoming the fastest eighth-grader in Delaware. His accomplishments already include holding the state record for eighth-graders in cross country, running 17:46 at the DIAA Championships in November. He improved his 5K time to 17:34 at the Colorectal Cancer Awareness 5K in March. In indoor track, he is listed as one of the state leaders with first-place times of 2:07.03.84 in the 800, 4:56.73 in the 1,600 and 10:53.00 in the 3,200. His outdoor track performances are similar, as his current bests are 2:07.03 in the 800, 4:42.54 in the 1,600, 10:18.09 in the 3,200 and 4:49.06 in the mile. He's currently the fastest eighth-grader in the state in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 outdoor events.
Douglas Simpson
Douglas is a member of Cape’s warehouse of pole vaulters. He is fearless, gregarious and gracious. Many vaulters share those qualities, as they spend hours each big meet encouraging one another to reach new heights. At last week’s Henlopen Conference Championship meet, Douglas set a personal best by clearing 13 feet. He then moved up and cleared 13-6 to place second behind teammate Will DiPaolo, who won the event in 14-7 and owns the school record at 15-7. “Will helps us all so much,” Douglas said. "I’m told a school placing seven vaulters in the top eight at a big meet in Delaware has probably never happened.” Cape placed six vaulters over the 12-foot mark. Cape scored 33 points in the pole vault at the conference championship, and they will need major points in the state meet to win over Middletown and Salesianum. Jesse Standard of Middletown won the New Castle County Championship with a jump of 12-6.
Claudia Stazzone
Claudia is a sophomore cross country and track distance runner at Cape. She represents quality of depth for the Henlopen Conference champion Vikings. Claudia picked up a pair of second-place finishes at the meet, running 5:25 in the 1,600 meters and 11:52 in the 3,200 meters. She also ran on the winning 4-by-800-meter relay that finished in 9:58 with Logan Crotty, Isabel Mastrangelo and Maile Godwin. Claudia ran second behind Morgan Thompson of Caesar Rodney in the 1,600 (5:22 to 5:25) and again to Thompson in the 3,200 (11:46 to 11:52). “We ran together during both races,” Claudia said. "She has a really good kick, but I’m happy contributing points (18.5) to the team victory." Claudia’s older brother Riley ran the same events for the boys – 4:28 in the 1,600 and 9:32 in the 3,200. He was also on the 4-by-800 relay with Jason Baker, Jamar Beasley and Andrew Radka. Riley contributed 12.5 points to the boys' team victory.
