Author to discuss ‘Eagles of Heart Mountain’ Jan. 6 online
Bradford Pearson, author of “The Eagles of Heart Mountain: A True Story of Football, Incarceration, and Resistance in World War II America,” will discuss his new book at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6, in a live, online free event presented by the Lewes Public Library and Browseabout Books.
“The Eagles of Heart Mountain” is an impeccably researched, deeply moving, never-before-told story about a Japanese-American incarceration camp in Wyoming and its extraordinary high school football team. During the team’s undefeated 1943 season, the Eagles soared over competitors from nearby, predominantly white high schools. Pearson highlights the struggles, disruptions, and political tensions amid all the excitement. His inspiring tale honors the resilience of extraordinary heroes and the power of sports during one of the darkest moments in American history.
The live, Zoom-based discussion will begin at 5 p.m., Jan. 6, and is free to the public. Registration is required under Virtual Programs for Adults at lewes.lib.de.us. Bradford Pearson is the former features editor of Southwest: The Magazine. He has written for The New York Times, Esquire, Time, and Salon, among many other publications. He grew up in Hyde Park, N.Y., and now lives in Philadelphia. “The Eagles of Heart Mountain” is his first book. Pearson will be in conversation with Jason Gay, The Wall Street Journal’s sports columnist and a humor columnist for its Review section. Gay was named 2016 Sports Columnist of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists and authored the bestselling book “Little Victories: A Sportswriter’s Notes on Winning at Life.”
