Author Ilona Holland, illustrator Judy Love to discuss historical fiction April 13

‘Lost Locket’ writer receives National Federation of Press Women award
April 6, 2019

In a seminar offered by the Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild, “The Lost Locket of Lewes” author Ilona Holland and illustrator Judy Love will speak on Illustrating the Writer’s Imagination from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, off Route 1 behind Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth Beach. Cost to attend is $30.

Love has illustrated more than 40 books for publishers including Charlesbridge and Harper Collins.  In 2017, she and Holland teamed up to produce the historical fiction book, “The Lost Locket of Lewes.”  During their year-long collaboration, images were born and transformed through words and in art while being informed by research.

In this seminar participants will learn how the words of the writer informed illustrations and how the development of the images influenced word selection. Participants will hear how the artist and writer worked together to create a complementary mix of images and words to tell a story.

Participants will see images of Lewes in 1893 and learn how the writer and illustrator integrated specific historical details into the book.  Finally, they will share the challenges they encountered in creating the book’s cover and Judy will demonstrate the steps required in making illustrations camera ready.

“The Lost Locket of Lewes” is the 2019 recipient of the First Place Award for Children’s Fiction given by the National Federation of Press Women and the Delaware Press Association.  Books are available at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and the Lewes Historical Society, Kids’ Ketch and Biblion Books in Lewes.
