Author of inspiring tale of deafblind puppy to appear Aug. 4

July 25, 2021

The Lewes Public Library, Delaware Humane Association and Browseabout Books will welcome author Melissa Shapiro for a live, online conversation about her new book, “Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy and His Family,” at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 4.

When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro got a call about fostering a tiny deafblind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation, she didn’t hesitate to say yes. Little did she know how that decision would transform her, her family and the network of caring admirers following the saga of the indomitable pink pup. Curious, engaged and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family, helping each of them recognize strengths they had never seen in themselves. Shapiro’s heartwarming memoir illustrates the power of empathy, resilience, and kindness - reminds us that love will always find a way.

“We are thrilled to partner with Browseabout Books, the Lewes Public Library, Melissa Shapiro, and the world famous Piglet,” said Patrick J. Carroll, executive director of Delaware Humane Association. "DHA’s mission is to make friends for life by connecting people with animals, and by building strong relationships to better serve our community - because all animals, no matter what, deserve a second chance. We are inspired by Piglet’s resilience - a steadfast reminder to never give up and always lead with kindness.”

To register for the Zoom-based event, visit the Virtual Programs for Adults page at the Lewes Public Library’s website: lewes.lib.de.us or go to tinyurl.com/zoomwithauthors.
