Autism Delaware plans in-person annual fundraiser walk Oct. 23 in Lewes

Volunteers still needed to help with event
September 20, 2021

Autism Delaware wants everyone to know that the 2021 annual Walk for Autism will proceed live in October, following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and state parks for safely gathering at outdoor sites during the pandemic.

Guidelines include wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, and staggering start times in order to limit the number of people on the trails at any given time. Advance registration for the walk is required in order to regulate team size.

The southern Delaware Walk, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, remains at the Cape Henlopen State Park, where it has taken place for many years. The northern Delaware walk, Saturday, Oct. 16, has been relocated from Bellevue State Park to Fox Point State Park, where the agency was able to reserve the entire site for the event, allowing plenty of room for social distancing.

People who are unable to participate in the event or uncomfortable with the required COVID safety measures can use the Virtual Walker option, walking around their neighborhoods, on a treadmill, wherever and whenever they choose, and sending in a video of their walk for posting on social media.

“We have been planning these walks with optimism, creativity and flexibility,” said David Woods, Autism Delaware director of Fund Development and Engagement. “Safety is the No. 1 priority for our walkers, volunteers, and staff. We have designed the events within the current pandemic guidelines while maintaining the family reunion atmosphere that has always been at the heart of this event.”

Volunteers are still needed for the walks at both locations; to find out more and sign up, visit autismdelaware.org and click on Get Involved.
