B+ Foundation fundraiser breaks record

The Starboard is known for its fundraising, and although last year saw a dip in its ability to host in-person events, this year it is back in the game and bigger than ever.

One of its larger fundraising events every year is the Black Tag auction through LowDigitTags.com, when bidding takes place on Black Starboard VIP cards that resemble the black Delaware license tags.

These cards are a juiced-up version of the Starboard VIP cards, and they get the cardholder and a guest past any lines and into priority seating for brunch. The fundraiser happens virtually in support of the B+ Foundation, and this year smashed previous records, bringing in an astounding total of $83,468, nearly double the amount from 2019.

Keith “Toastie” Kirk, who helps coordinate the online auction, now in its ninth year, said, “This is a really heartwarming fundraiser, and it’s always amazing to see the community bid on the cards and raise money for B+, and to know the broad impact of their contributions.”

The B+ Foundation is the largest provider of financial assistance for families of kids fighting cancer. It has provided millions of dollars toward research into childhood cancers as well. The B+ Foundation is steadfast in its mission to raise essential funds that go directly to families in need.

Founded by Joe McDonough in memory of his son Andrew, who died from acute myelogenous leukemia in 2007 at age 14, the organization’s vision is to be a beacon of hope and positivity to the families it touches. It was named for Andrew's blood type – B+ – and the positive symbol is fitting because that was how Andrew lived his life: brightly and positively.

The organization honors Andrew’s memory each and every day through its mission of benevolence, and by providing care to families who are struggling. The B+ Foundation is a reminder that even in people’s darkest hours, in circumstances like battling childhood leukemia, there are helpers.
