The following letter is in response to a letter written by Elizabeth Rupprecht, in the Sept. 17 edition of the Cape Gazette.
The ability to be a good friend, to dance, to sing with whomever and to drive a trolley in no way obviates her (Joan Oeffner) misrepresentation of her position on the Lewes Board of Ethics or her possible violation of the standard of conduct. Lack of discrimination is shown by action, not words. I am sure Ms. Oeffner’s neighbors have other qualities worth praising and may or may not appreciate being drawn into her narrative. Having filed two previous complaints against HPARC, her publicly stated viewpoint undermines the resolution of those matters. Might I remind you that your friend is a public official and as such, is not immune from criticism. Query: if Ms. Oeffner’s many African American friends had been on HPARC, would the decision on the net reel have been different?
The rally revealed that both sides of the community support the net reel.
