Bayside racquet players raise funds for Samaritan’s Feet

August 8, 2020

Tennis and pickleball players filled the courts at Bayside Golf Resort in Selbyville July 18 to raise funds and awareness for Samaritan's Feet, a nonprofit that serves and inspires hope in children worldwide by providing shoes as the foundation to a healthy and spiritual life.

Despite weather conditions close to 100 degrees and 100 percent humidity, players made it a point to play for those less fortunate all over the world.

Samaritan's Feet’s founder Emmanuel "Manny" Ohonme was a boy given his first pair of shoes by a missionary from Wisconsin over 30 years ago in Lagos, Nigeria. Manny took those lessons of passion, hard work, and believing in a dream, and earned a scholarship to play basketball in the United States, along with earning with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. In 2003, he started Samaritan's Feet, which has delivered over 7.5 million pairs of shoes to people in need worldwide.

Bayside Resort Golf Club first hosted this charity event in 2009 under the leadership of Director of Racquet Sports Marty Godwin. The tennis and pickleball community enjoyed a social afterward with cold drinks and refreshments while Godwin highlighted the work of Manny, his wife Tracie and Samaritan's Feet, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.
