The Fourth of July is one of the Cape Region's most cherished traditions. Friends and families gather at the beach, visitors fill our towns for various celebrations and fireworks light up the night sky. In 2026, it's also time to celebrate our nation's 250th birthday and enjoy everything that makes our communities special.

This year, however, the holiday comes with an added challenge: extreme heat. Forecasts call for temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, making it essential for everyone to take precautions. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, wear lightweight clothing, seek shade whenever possible and don't underestimate the power of the sun. Cooling stations throughout Sussex County are available for those who need them. 

The holiday weekend also means crowded roads and busy destinations. Whether you're heading to the beach, attending a parade or making your way to a fireworks display, pack plenty of patience. Traffic delays are inevitable, parking will be limited, and wait times at local restaurants and businesses will likely be longer than usual. Remember that the employees serving meals, directing traffic and helping visitors are working hard to make the holiday enjoyable for everyone. A little kindness and understanding can go a long way.

Lewes Beach had a long tradition of unsanctioned fireworks, but that was set aside a number of years ago when the Go Fourth group worked hard for a show worthy of the First Town in the First State. That was a very smart decision, because a moment of carelessness can quickly turn a celebration into an emergency.

Our first responders, healthcare workers and public safety officials will be on duty throughout the weekend, ready to respond when needed. They'll be working long hours and late nights, so the public should thank them to show appreciation for their willingness to jump into action if necessary. 

Our community shines brightest when residents and visitors look out for one another. By respecting the heat, exercising patience and celebrating responsibly, we can ensure this year's milestone Independence Day is one to remember.
