Just a few weeks after beginning work in Rehoboth Beach, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. has made its way to Dewey. The company was awarded the $7.2 million beach replenishment contract by the Army Corps of Engineers in September. The project calls for dredging 409,000 cubic yards of sand from an offshore borrow site and placing it on the shoreline – 190,000 cubic yards in Rehoboth, 219,000 cubic yards in Dewey.

In an email Nov. 8, Stephen Rochette, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said there was an estimated 7 to 10 days of work left in Dewey Beach.

The project is a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control – 65 percent federal, 35 percent state. The project is designed to reduce storm damage to infrastructure and has been done four times before – 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016.
