Beacon lacrosse beats Mariner 11-5 to close out season for both teams

May 15, 2019

The lacrosse game between Mariner and Beacon at Champions Stadium May 13 began in “Werewolves of London” weather, the zone where bad hair day meets helmet heads.

Cape’s two middle school boys’ lacrosse teams were in the final round of stellar seasons. The Mariner Vikings lost by a goal to Sussex Academy, then came back to tie the Seahawks.

Beacon was unbeaten except for a 7-7 tie game versus St. Edmond’s Academy.

Beacon jumped on top early and stayed in front of Mariner for an 11-5 victory.

Beacon goalies Mikayla Lindsay and Anna Lopez split time all season. Both players are fearless; they make stops and can clear the ball.

Mariner countered with Zachary Naar in the cage. Zach is a big old rascal destined to be a great high school player. The Mariner Vikings finished the season 8-2-1.

Goals scored against Beacon were by Cody Trivits with three and Keishawn Mansfield with two.

Notable Mariner eighth-graders moving up to Cape include middies Cody Trivits, Keishawn Mansfield, Dylan Henry, Joshua Wright and Austin Bacot. Attackmen include Michael Sposato, Thomas Gibbs and Maddox Gipko. Defensemen are Scott Webster, Iszaiha Purnell and Dane Reyes.

Mariner is coached by Jacob Kee, Steven Hamer and David Naar.

Beacon goals were scored by Jahden Cannon with four, Joe Coveleski three, and single goals by Brexton Carter, CJ Fritchman, Luke Burton and Brady Lamb.

Coach Joe Vavala said, ”We also decided not to make cuts during tryouts, which was great but required us to differentiate our practice plans to meet the needs of all our players. While tough to manage at first, the decision to keep everyone was rewarding because of the individual growth we saw in everyone. It will be difficult to once again replace a talented group of eighth-graders, but I'm excited about the development I saw in our younger guys, and the chance they'll have to step up and showcase their skills next season.”

When asked about promising eighth-graders, Vavala said, “Pretty much everyone listed as a goal scorer above plus our defense of Brody Smith, Luke Dennis [the third Dennis brother] and Ryan Pickard.

“Also, it should be noted that CJ Fritchman is pretty much a cheat code on face-offs. He probably won close to 90 percent of his face-offs this year, which is an outrageous number. He was one of our best offensive players, made sure we controlled the middle of the field in every game, and had the responsibility of guarding the top two kids we faced all season. Pretty easy to coach when you start with the ball after every face-off.”
