November 5, 2017

Beacon soccer closed out the season Nov. 1 at Legends Stadium by defeating district rival Mariner 4-1 after leading 3-0 at halftime.

The Beacon Vikings of coaches Justin Vorheis and Bill Bennett complete the season with a record of 8-2-1, while the B team closed with a record of 7-2-2.

Beacon’s leading scorers for the season were Austin Rhue with 12 goals, Gary Hayes with 8 and Brandon Somoza-Lima with 6. Brian Fleming led the B team with 9 goals.

“A very talented and athletic group of guys this year,” Vorheis said. “It’s been fun to coach them the last three years, and to see them grow and improve.”

Mariner, coached by Chris Myers and Jacob Kee, fielded a very young team, according to Principal Fred Best. They completed the campaign 0-11, after going undefeated in 2016 9-0-2.

“A lot of talent and participation on the field,” said Cape soccer coach Patrick Kilby, who did the announcing for the game.
