December 23, 2019

Beacon versus Mariner wrestling Dec. 18 at the Cape Big House was won by Beacon 51-31, serving as an undercard for the varsity match where Cape battled visiting Wilmington Charter and won 61-9.

The night featured 10 middle school exhibition matches before the 16 weight-class bouts, followed by five junior varsity matches and 14 varsity bouts, equalling about 45 bouts over four hours of wrestling.

“This is the first year both our middle schools had full lineups, plus there were 10 exhibition matches,” said Cape varsity coach Chris Mattioni, now in his 25th year. “Wrestling is a strong sport at Cape and in the Henlopen Conference.”

There were 11 wins by pin in the middle school match. No individual results were posted on either school’s website, and Rosetta Stone is needed to decipher the scorebooks.
