Dr. David Tam, Beebe Healthcare president and CEO, will serve as chair of the Southern Delaware Heart Walk 2021.
The walk is being planned for Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand in Rehoboth Beach, pending statewide COVID-19 regulations. It will support the American Heart Association, whose mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.
“It is a tremendous honor to lead the Southern Delaware Heart Walk this year,” said Tam. “We have a vision at Beebe to greatly improve the health and well-being of all Delawareans. Heart disease and stroke account for one of every three deaths in the U.S. The heart walk is designed to raise awareness, educate the community and inspire all of us to make the small changes that can make a significant difference in living a longer, healthier life.”
The Southern Delaware Heart Walk is an opportunity for participants to walk in honor of those who suffer from heart disease and to raise funds for the advancement of research initiatives and community education programs. Heart disease is this nation's No. 1 cause of death, claiming nearly a million American lives a year, more than all forms of cancer combined. Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death in the U.S., the No. 4 cause of death in Delaware, and the leading cause of long-term disability. However, around 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and prevention. The heart walk encourages Americans to make healthy choices including proper nutrition and adding physical activities, such as walking, to their daily routine.
“Dr. Tam and Beebe Healthcare are tremendous supporters of the American Heart Association. We are indeed honored to have Dr. Tam’s strong leadership, and we applaud his incredibly deep commitment to the community, and our mission and lifesaving work,” said David Morris, executive director, American Heart Association in Delaware.
Tam arrived from California in March 2020, earlier than originally planned, to be sure he was on the front lines to lead Beebe Healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a distinguished and accomplished healthcare executive, and a retired officer in the U.S. Navy. Tam comes to Delaware with vast experience in large public health systems. He completed his pediatrics residency at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif., and a pediatric neurology fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. Tam is a board-certified fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
The 2021 Southern Delaware Heart Walk will feature health screenings, CPR demonstrations, activities for children, sponsor tents, giveaways, healthy fruit and snacks, and entertainment. This event will take all precautions and measures to adhere to current Delaware COVID-19 regulations.
Beebe Healthcare is a sponsor of the Southern Delaware Heart Walk.
