Bicyclists must observe trail etiquette

June 7, 2019

The new rail trail is a wonderful venue for walkers and bicyclists. My wife and I were walking the trail, keeping to the right as trail etiquette requires, when an undetected bicyclist whizzed by us from behind at a high speed, almost touching us.

The bicyclist came upon us totally without warning. Had I moved to tie my shoe or pick up a piece of litter, he would have struck me.

This has happened a number of times. Courteous bicyclists observing the trail etiquette usually give a “heads up” or “on the left,” but there are still too many bicyclists who ignore the trail etiquette and create a hazardous situation for pedestrians.
