Biden wrapping up 2021 in Rehoboth Beach

President expected to be in town Monday, Dec. 27 to Thursday, Dec. 30
December 27, 2021

It doesn’t appear President Joe Biden will be ringing in the new year at his North Shores home near Rehoboth Beach, but he is spending most of 2021’s last week there.

Biden arrived to town at 1:25 p.m., Monday, Dec. 27. The guidance doesn’t provide a departure date, but the Federal Aviation Administration has issued a no-fly zone over the surrounding area through 9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 30.

Before arriving to Rehoboth, Biden participated in the White House COVID-19 Response Team’s regular call with the National Governors Association to discuss his administration’s response to the Omicron variant and to hear from the governors on the needs in their states. The guidance says Biden will receive the weekly economic briefing virtually from Rehoboth.

A reminder of security measures taken when Biden is in town:

• Gordons Pond users should expect restrictions – the park’s parking lot is just around the corner from Biden’s home and is used as a landing site for Marine One.

• The FAA’s temporary flight restrictions limit use of the airspace from Dover south to Ocean City, Md., and west to the Delaware-Maryland border.

• The Coast Guard establishes security zones in the ocean area immediately in front of North Shores beach and in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal near North Shores.

To date, since being sworn in as president in January, Biden has been to church a couple times, taken his bike for a few rides on the Gordons Pond Trail, walked the beach and conducted a press conference from Rehoboth Beach City Hall during his local visits. However, he’s yet to make any surprise appearances at downtown shops or restaurants. If he does, send pictures to cflood@capegazette.com.
