Bill Newcott to sign books at Browseabout Oct. 2

September 23, 2021

Local author and radio host Bill Newcott will be signing copies of his new book at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach Saturday, Oct. 2, from noon to 2 p.m. as part of the bookstore’s local author series.

Newcott’s “All The Right Wrong Turns: True (And Sometimes Twisted) Tales of Coastal Delaware from the Back Roads to the Beaches” takes an off-kilter look at the people, places and history of the area. Scouring every corner of coastal Delaware, Newcott meets sex-crazed alpacas, discovers the sometimes grisly secrets of local cemeteries, sails with a ferry captain, flies with a crop duster - and visits with a team of university scientists who have proven that Delaware sunsets are, indeed, among the most beautiful anywhere.

A longtime writer/editor at National Geographic magazine and still a frequent contributor, Newcott writes regular features for Delaware Beach Life Magazine along with his column, Treasure Hunting, a winner of multiple Delaware Press Association and National Association of Press Women awards. The weekly film critic for The Saturday Evening Post, he is the creator of AARP’s Movies For Grownups franchise.

Newcott’s weekly Movies for the Rest of Us show is heard Fridays at 8:50 a.m. and 4:50 p.m. on Radio Rehoboth 99.1.

“I’ve written about people and places from Beijing to Tahiti to Europe, and I’ve got to say I’ve never been more intrigued by any place than right here in coastal Delaware,” says Newcott, who moved from Washington, D.C., to Lewes in 2013.

“There are, of course, the families that have been here forever. Combine that with the influx of people who have come to, in some way, discover their true selves, and you’re going to find enough material for a dozen books.

“One thing I’ve discovered in a lifetime of traveling and writing: Everyone is weird in some wonderful, world-changing way. It’s that universal human state of eccentricity that I try to capture in my work.”

Many of the book’s chapters are adapted from Newcott’s work for Delaware Beach Life, where he earned recognition as the International Regional Magazine Association’s 2020 Writer of the Year.
