Bird photography workshop at Prime Hook May 1

April 10, 2022

The Friends of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge will host a free workshop with wildlife photographer Ed Norman from 8 a.m. to noon, Sunday, May 1, focusing on bird photography.

Dressed for the weather, attendees will meet at the refuge visitor center and go outside, weather permitting, to take photos before returning to review their work.

Participants should bring their cameras, although a limited number of digital cameras are also available for use. Binoculars and tripods are welcome, and a telephoto lens or camera with good zoom quality is recommended.

There is no cost for the workshop, but the number of participants is limited, so advance reservations are required to be made by emailing primehookowner@yahoo.com. Those who sign up will receive a confirmation email the week before the session. If necessary, a waiting list for the workshop will be maintained.

Subjects to be discussed will include appropriate gear for the bird/wildlife photographer; camera settings; how to get the best out of  photography equipment; getting close to birds; how, where and when to find birds; photographing birds in flight; backyard birds; feeding stations; ethics of bird and wildlife photography; and post processing to make bird photos pop.
