The 25th annual Boast the Coast event will take place Saturday, Oct. 2, a year later than its actual anniversary due to COVID-19-imposed event cancellations in 2020.
Conceived in 1996, Boast the Coast showcases Lewes’ nautical heritage and features activities that complement the University of Delaware’s annual Coast Day event held the first Sunday in October.
This year’s Boast the Coast activities are sponsored by Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant and Beebe Healthcare, with partial funding from Southern Delaware Tourism.
A number of free Boast the Coast activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 1812 Park near the city dock on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. Children’s activities include free nautically themed face painting and balloon art by Chuckles the Clown.
Freedom Boat Club will offer free boat tours leaving the city dock from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. These short excursions on the canal will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis with 6-8 passengers per trip; no advance reservations are needed.
Also during those hours, visitors to the park and dock will be entertained by Lewes vocalist Jgar Hellwig, who will perform a repertoire of Broadway show tunes and other popular favorites; and can participate in a seafood tasting with food priced individually by Full Belly Bistro restaurant in Lewes.
Cape Water Tours will offer two, hour-long narrated tours departing from the city dock at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Called Floating Through Lewes Maritime History, the tour is narrated by local Lewes historian Mike DiPaolo. The cost is $18 for adults and $12 for children under 12. Reservations are available online at CapeWaterTours.com.
The annual Lewes Merchants’ Fall Sidewalk Sale has long been associated with Boast the Coast. It is a three-day happening wrapped around Saturday’s Boast the Coast events, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday to Sunday, Oct. 1 to 3. Most retail businesses in the Historic Lewes Business District participate in this annual sidewalk sale.
