A 13-year-old boy faces charges after stealing a car July 6, and leading law enforcement officials from several jurisdictions on a high-speed chase along Route 1.

Delaware Natural Resources Police were notified about 1:45 a.m. about a vehicle pursuit along Route 1 in Fenwick Island, which had reached south to Ocean City, Md., at one point, said Deputy Chief John McDerby of Delaware Natural Resources Police.

During the multi-agency pursuit, police said, the boy sped along Route 1, crossing into oncoming traffic lanes at times. The chase ended after officers deployed stop sticks, but the boy fled on foot. 

At 5:40 a.m., police said, the boy’s father turned his son over to officers, who took the boy into custody without incident.

Police learned the 13-year-old was camping with his family at Delaware Seashore State Park when he stole another camper's vehicle. Neither the boy’s family nor the owner of the vehicle were aware the boy had stolen the vehicle.

The boy was taken to Fenwick Island Police Department where he was arraigned by Sussex County Family Court and charged with felony theft of a motor vehicle, felony disregarding a police officer signal, third-degree attempt to commit vehicular assault, resisting arrest, reckless driving 90 mph or greater, driving without a valid license, and other charges related to driving across curbs, road dividers or separations, driving in undesignated areas, and driving in the wrong lanes and direction.

The boy was committed to the Stevenson House Youth Detention Facility on $4,800 secured bail.
