Breast Fest 5K features real-time, in-person distance runners

Muze and Rzucidlo capture second titles of summer
August 18, 2020

Tyler Muse, 26, of Bel Air, Md., is a graduate student at Salisbury University. The former Wilmington College runner who is in marathon training mode waxed the field Aug. 15 at the Breast Fest 5K, running an easy 15:48. Nick Cruz, 24, of Milford was second in 16:54, followed by Colten Morris, 18, of Lewes in 16:57.

“The race was over so fast,” Muse said, after running a 4:53 first mile and hitting 10:03 at the two-mile mark. “I’m going to go out and run another 10 to keep my mileage up.”

The women’s race was won by Emily Rzucidlo, 17, a rising senior at Ursuline Academy, in 18:54. Emily was followed by Natalie Donaldson, 15, a sophomore at Saint Mark’s, in 19:30. Bethany Killmon Wright, 24, former Sussex Tech and Misericordia runner, was third in 20:16.

The start of the fall cross country season was pushed back to February for Delaware high schools, and coaching contact and training are still up in the air, so the young runners thrive on finding live races with a chance to compete.

A total of 107 runners started in three waves for social distancing on a pleasant morning for running.

“I was planning on running the Chicago Marathon this fall, but that was canceled, so now I’m looking at Houston later in the year,” Muse said.

There were two birthday boys in the race. Mike Donovan, a 6-foot-8 former Marine, celebrated year 60 by walking long strides in 45:27. The 60-64 age group is insanely competitive, as Brian Daugherty, 60, of Edgewater, Md., won that age group in 23:49.

Paul “Skip” Kiefer joined the 80-and-over group. The Lancaster landscaper ran 44:13 to win his age group. He could have run a lot slower, as he was in his group alone.

Mike Sewell, 51, won the male masters in 18:41. Matt Sparacino, 42, placed second in masters in 18:56.

Laura Berger, 45, of Landenberg, Pa., won the female masters in 22:06. Joanne Nemes, 50, of Mount Wolf, Pa., was second in female masters in 26:14.

The 18th annual Dewey Beach Patrol 5K and 10K will be live and virtual Saturday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 a.m., starting at Northbeach restaurant.
