A 59-year-old Bridgeville man died Oct. 5 during a work accident at Allen Harim in Harbeson, police say.
The man was working at 8:54 p.m. with another employee as they tried to change the battery of a machine known as a pallet jack, said Sgt. Richard Bratz of the Delaware State Police.
The new replacement battery was secured in an electric hoist and while the battery was lowered by an electric lever, Bratz said, the corner of the new battery got hung up on the corner of another battery that was next to the jack. The employee was leaning forward to manually guide the new battery onto the jack away from the obstruction; after the new battery cleared the obstruction it continued to move downward, but the horizontal block portion of the hoist struck the employee, Bratz said. The employee was transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare where he succumbed to his injuries, Bratz said.
Detectives are continuing their investigation. Bratz said there are no signs of foul play, and the body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science. Bratz said the name of the victim will not be released.
