A Bridgeville man faces burglary and theft charges after police say he climbed a ladder into his neighbor’s home Aug. 24.

Ronald D. Smith, 32, took a ladder from a home in the 7000 block of Federalsburg Road near Bridgeville and climbed through a second-floor window at 6:40 p.m. when police were called for a “burglary not in progress,” said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

The 68-year-old landlord was not home during the incident, Jaffe said, and a tenant in the home did not contact Smith.

When police arrived, Jaffe said, Smith took off running and was caught nearby. He was taken into custody without further incident; a computer inquiry revealed that Smith had a no-contact order and was to stay 100 or more yards away from the residence, Jaffe said.

Smith was charged with first-degree burglary, theft under $1,500 where a victim is 62 years of age or older, resisting arrest, and breach of release. He was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $7,000 secured bond.
