Bullis Bulldogs blast Cape boys’ lacrosse 15-7

Cape to play at Sussex Tech on Wednesday
March 25, 2019

The Bullis School of Potomac, Md., rang the bell early and often March 23 against visiting Cape, leading 10-0 at the half, then 12-0 into the third quarter before Gabe Best cranked home a shot for the Vikings. Cape was excited, while Bullis seemed unimpressed.

“We weren’t engaged in the first half,” said veteran Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi of the opening game, which his Vikings lost 15-7. “It was basic stuff like not throwing and catching, and Bullis is a great team. You will get destroyed if you don’t bring your A game.”

Bullis improved to 5-1 on the season with signature wins over Baltimore rivals Gilmon 8-7 and Loyola 7-3. Their lone loss was a 9-7 defeat to McDonogh of Owings Mills, Md.

Cape ran off six straight goals to cut the lead to 12-6 in the opening minutes of the final quarter.

Vikings goals were scored by Gabe Best with three, Luke D’Ambrogi with two, and Adem Tekmen and Greg Boyce with one each. Jaden Davis had an assist.

Billy Ott, getting his first full day’s work at face-off, picked up eight ground balls. Baxter Travers was credited with 15 saves for the Vikings.

Bullis coach Jeff Bellistri, a 1986 graduate of the Naval Academy, has been head coach of the Bulldogs since 2015 after serving as an assistant for 14 years. Bellistri just reached his 100th win as a head coach.

Cape will play at Sussex Tech at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 27.  The JV game begins at 4 p.m.

The Vikings will host Worcester Prep at 6:30 p.m., Friday, March 29.
