Buy tickets by April 19 for Governor’s Prayer Breakfast 

The Delaware Governor’s Prayer Breakfast will be held at 7 a.m., Thursday, May 2, at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover.

As part of the National Day of Prayer activities, Gov. John Carney will join elected officials, religious leaders, and community members for the 59th Annual Delaware Governor’s Prayer Breakfast. The tradition was initiated by Gov. J. Caleb Boggs in 1961 and embraced by succeeding chief executives.

This year’s program, themed United: Bridging the Divide, will feature a resident from each of the First State’s three counties. They will speak about how they have overcome division and led community service efforts that seek to bring together and better their communities and the state.

Hundreds of attendees are expected to gather for the annual event to pray for the nation, state and local communities. The prayer breakfast provides Delawareans a time to reflect on how to personally serve the state in the upcoming year. Attendees share a renewed commitment to their individual faith and to making Delaware a better place.

Keynote speakers are India S. Colon, Kevin Cooper and Dr. Reba Ross Hollingsworth.

Hollingsworth, a Dover resident, is a retired educator and civil rights activist. She also was an instructor and trainer for parent and teacher effectiveness training courses, and co-owner of Hollingsworth & Hollingsworth Consultant Services, specializing in pre-marriage and marriage counseling, and parliamentary procedure workshops. She is a 2018 inductee into the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame, and is known for her diverse involvements in civic, professional and community service activities.

Cooper is a 17-year veteran of the Delaware Department of Correction, having worked two years as a correctional officer and the past 15 as a probation and parole officer. Today he is a senior probation and parole officer managing a specialized Level III drug court caseload in Georgetown. Outside of work, he volunteers with the Millsboro Little League, having served as a coach, manager, board member and mentor.

Colon is a Wilmington native of Puerto Rican descent. She recently retired from the U.S. Air Force and Delaware Air National Guard with 22 years of honorable service as a highly decorated war veteran. Today she continues to serve as a community liaison for Hispanics and as one of the leading activists and public speakers in the state.

Choral students from Dover High School will provide musical entertainment. Soloist Sara Frieh, a sixth-grader from Rehoboth Beach, also will perform. Seaford High School Navy JROTC members will serve as color guard.
