Caesar Rodney decks Cape 48-21, handing Henlopen North to Smyrna

Cape wrestles Sussex Central Friday In State Duals

Cape wrestled at Caesar Rodney Feb. 6 with a chance to win the Henlopen Northern Division outright with a victory. Cape’s Anthony Caruso and Andre Currie were out of the lineup due to illness. A steep hill to climb became even steeper.

The match started at 170, and after four bouts, Cape led 18-0 with wins by decision at 170 from Roy Jones 4-0 over Brock Conner; at 182, Chris Handlin over Ryan Rigby 13-12; and pins from Eduardo Saez (195) over Shamar Nelson in 3:51 and Billy Ott (220) over Josh Dyer in 5:22.

Ten bouts remained. The Riders won nine, including five by fall, one via forfeit, a tech fall and a major decision to beat Cape 48-21. Carson Kammerer (120) won Cape’s only match of the 10, taking an 8-2 decision over Mason Bush.

Smyrna won the Henlopen North by virtue of a 33-30 win over CR earlier in the season.

The Division I State Dual Meet Championships begins with the quarterfinal round Friday, Feb. 8, at Smyrna High School. The Division II tournament is at A.I. DuPont High School. In Division I action, No. 8 Delcastle (8-3) will face No. 1 Smyrna (9-4) at 6 p.m., while No. 7 St. Georges (6-5) takes on No. 2 Caesar Rodney (10-2), also at 6 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., No. 5 Cape Henlopen (16-4) faces No. 4 Sussex Central (9-3) and No. 6 Middletown (11-3) battles No. 3 Salesianum (10-2).

The semifinals will be held at Smyrna at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9.
