Cape and Woodbridge girls’ basketball teams scrimmage at the Big House
The reigning Henlopen Conference division champions met on the court at Cape’s Big House Nov. 23 for a 9 a.m. scrimmage of 40 minutes, broken into 10-minute quarters. It wasn’t hard to envision them meeting in late February for the Henlopen Conference Championship.
The Woodbridge Blue Raiders, under head coach Emilio Perry, were 20-0 last season before losing to Cape in the Henlopen Conference Championship 56-42.
The Vikings were 17-3 last season, and at first glance, they look like pretty much the same team as last season.
“I think we will have a more balanced attack on offense this year, and we will do more off-ball stuff than we did last year,” said coach Pat Woods. “I thought we would and think we still can have a huge impact on the boards. But we need to practice it.”
Cape started Abbey Hearn, Dania Cannon, Mehkia Applewhite, Morgan Mumford and Carlin Quinn. Cape has size and versatility, and new pieces to work into the lineup this year.
“I thought today was good. I was happy with our pace and transition offense,” Woods said. “Defensively, we need some work. Rebounding needs to improve. I love our ball movement. Dania did a great job running things. We will also need to be able to be patient, and look for third and fourth options in our transition offense. Never got to that today. And inbounds needs work. But all we’ve been working on is offensive concepts and how to play.”
The Vikings will participate in a nine-team play day at Sanford Friday, Nov. 29, and open the season on the road at Polytech Thursday, Dec. 5, before playing Archbishop John Carroll out of Philly Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Tip-Off Classic at the 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington.
