Cape baseball all-stars play in Blue-Gold game

June 14, 2018

People ask, what else could the Cape baseball seniors do to top the 5-3 state championship victory over Caravel Academy at Frawley Stadium?

Well, they had a relaxing and fun time at the Blue-Gold All-Star game June 12 in the same venue. The score didn’t matter, but the Blue All-Stars won the game 10-2. What mattered was the camaraderie with the other players from around the state and the last hurrah with their teammates from Cape.

“We had a blast,” said Cape coach and Gold head coach Ben Evick. “It was so relaxing to just be around the kids with no pressure.”

As a matter of fact, the Cape coach and his assistants stayed in the dugout the entire game.

“Drew [Johnson] and I didn’t even coach the bases,” Evick said. “It was just so awesome being around the players.”

The Blue team had 11 hits in the game, while the Gold squad could only muster three.

Milford High’s Bryce Greenly recorded two of the three hits for the Gold team. He had a single in his first at-bat and a triple in his second at-bat to finish 2-for-2. He was named MVP for the Gold squad.

Sussex Central pitcher Trevor Collins pitched two innings for the Gold team, striking out four Blue batters.

“Trevor threw well,” said Evick.

Cape’s Austin Elliott walked twice and scored a run for Gold, while teammate Zach Dale drew a walk from the Blue pitching staff.

Zack Gelof and David Erickson were chosen to participate in the game, but were not able to attend due to other commitments.
