Cape senior Max Selders slams a Caravel pitch. The Cape baseball team dropped a 7-3 game to Caravel June 8 in the DIAA quarterfinals at Chris Short Field in Lewes.
The Vikings gave up four runs in the first inning and couldn't recover, as the Bucs outhit Cape 13-7.
"It was a great season," said senior Max Selders. "Lots of ups and downs, but more ups as we won the Henlopen Conference championship, won a lot of tough games. We just didn't have all the pieces together today. We couldn't string together hits. Hopefully the young guys will get it back for us next season."
"This is a great group of guys," said senior Emmett Wheatley, who went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the game. "It's obviously not the way we wanted to go out, losing a game like that. We just have to move on. We had a great season. The young guys learned a lot. They'll be back next season."
"We were real confident for this game," said Cape coach Ben Evick. "It just didn't go well in the first inning spotting them four runs. That's a big deficit. We just couldn't recover. Credit to Caravel. They hit the ball well. The ball just didn't land well."
The Bucs moved into the DIAA finals after defeating Sussex Central 4-1 June 10 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. Caesar Rodney was set to face Salesianum in the other semifinal June 11, after the Cape Gazette's deadline.
The championship game will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, June 12, at Frawley Stadium.
