Two big innings against Appoquinimink May 19 helped Cape baseball wrap up its regular-season home schedule with a 12-3 win, ending Senior Night on a positive note.
Before the Vikings handled the Jaguars, the playing careers of Emmett Wheatley, Max Selders and Robbie Payton were celebrated, as was the managerial career of Declan Gallagher. The lads were joined by their family along the third-base line.
Cape got to work early, putting up five runs in the first inning, and while they would score more, it would prove to be all the run support starting pitcher Jack Simeone needed. The junior struck out five through five innings and didn’t allow an earned run, as all three scores from Appoquinimink were unearned.
With the game tightened up at 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings took it upon themselves to loosen things up with patient approaches at the plate. Coupled with a few errors, Cape kept the bases loaded long enough for junior Dom Mangini to step to the plate. After doubling in his first at-bat, Mangini topped that smack by walloping a grand slam over the center-field wall as part of the six-run effort in the fifth inning to wrap up the scoring. Mangini ended the game with six RBIs and three runs scored.
The win moves Cape to 13-4. The Vikings will conclude their regular season with an away game against Wilmington Friends at 4:15 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, before traveling to Lake Forest for the Henlopen Conference Championship game slated to start at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 28.
